Terms of Service
Last updated: 20 May 2026
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of CaseLayer (the "Service"). By creating an account or using the Service you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
1. The Service
CaseLayer is a legal research assistant built for practising advocates in India. It provides paragraph-anchored research notes over Indian Supreme Court and Kerala High Court judgments, including citation status checks, distinguishing analysis, and a draft argument skeleton. The Service is a research aid; it does not constitute legal advice and is not a substitute for the independent judgment of a qualified advocate.
2. Eligibility and accounts
You must be at least 18 years old, a practising legal professional (or a student under the supervision of one), and capable of forming a binding contract under the Indian Contract Act, 1872. You are responsible for keeping your sign-in credentials secure and for all activity under your account.
You agree to provide accurate and current information when creating an account and to update it as needed. Each account is for a single user; you may not share access with other advocates or staff (see "Acceptable use" below).
3. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use the Service to violate any applicable law or regulation.
- Submit material you do not have the legal right to process (for example, privileged communications you are not authorised to share with a research vendor).
- Use automated scraping, bots, or other means to extract data from the Service in bulk.
- Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or circumvent the security measures of the Service.
- Resell, sublicense, or white-label the Service without our written permission.
- Submit content that is defamatory, obscene, or that infringes the rights of any third party.
We may suspend or terminate accounts that misuse the Service.
4. Billing
CaseLayer is free to sign up and free to draft. You pay only when the Service successfully delivers a completed research note. Pricing as displayed on the Billing page applies; per-tier prices (e.g. Sonnet ₹499, Opus ₹1,499 per note) and any discounted credit packs are inclusive of GST as charged.
Top-ups add credits to your wallet. Credits are non-refundable once consumed; unused wallet balance is refundable on request within 90 days of the top-up, minus any payment-processor fees. Failed runs (max iterations, budget exhausted, validation failure, or other system stops) are never charged.
We reserve the right to change pricing on 30 days' written notice; existing wallet balance is honoured at the price prevailing at the time of the top-up.
5. Intellectual property
The Service, including its retrieval models, prompts, code, and the structured output schema, is owned by CaseLayer and its licensors. Public judgments retrieved through the Service remain public-domain works of the Indian judiciary; CaseLayer claims no copyright over them.
You retain ownership of any content you upload (your client's brief, your counsel notes, the case profile, etc.). You grant CaseLayer a limited, non-exclusive licence to process this content for the sole purpose of delivering the Service to you.
You own the research notes produced for you and may use them in your professional work without restriction. Attribution to CaseLayer is appreciated but not required.
6. Confidentiality
We treat the case material you upload as confidential. Access is scoped to your account and is not visible to any other user. See the Privacy Policy for details of subprocessor access (Anthropic, Razorpay) and data retention windows.
7. Disclaimers
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available". Research notes are generated automatically and, while CaseLayer applies multiple guardrails (paragraph-anchor verification, citation integrity checks, bench-strength validation), no automated system can guarantee correctness in every case. You are responsible for independently verifying any authority you cite in a court filing.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, CaseLayer disclaims all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
8. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, CaseLayer's total cumulative liability arising out of or relating to the Service shall not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you paid to CaseLayer in the twelve months preceding the claim, or (b) ₹5,000. CaseLayer shall not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for loss of profits, revenue, data, or business opportunities, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.
9. Indemnity
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless CaseLayer from any claim arising from your misuse of the Service, your breach of these Terms, or your violation of any law or third-party right in connection with your use of the Service.
10. Termination
You may delete your account at any time by emailing hello@caselayer.in. We may suspend or terminate your account for material breach of these Terms, prolonged inactivity, or if continued operation becomes infeasible. On termination, you remain responsible for any outstanding charges; unused wallet balance is refundable per Section 4.
11. Changes to the Service or these Terms
We may modify the Service or these Terms from time to time. For material changes we will notify you by email or via a prominent notice on the website at least 14 days before the change takes effect. Continued use of the Service after the change constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
12. Governing law and jurisdiction
These Terms are governed by the laws of India. Subject to any mandatory law that grants you the right to sue in your place of residence, you and CaseLayer agree to submit any disputes arising out of or relating to the Service to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts at Ernakulam, Kerala.
